Alternative Fueled Vehicles Becoming Too Numerous to Hide

According to the US Energy Information Association, there were more than 600,000 alternative fueled vehicles (AFVs) in operation in the US in 2006. The US Government has been keeping track of how many AFVs there are in each state for years. They have also been breaking their count down by some of the major alternative fuels used. But they may have missed counting that many or more.

Unfortunately, their numbers are based on a very small number of actual surveys completed and a very large dose of mathematical extrapolation. They also do not cover all the major alternative fuel groups, and certainly do not get down to the fuel subgroup level.

Whether or not they're ever going to be able to get a fairly accurate count is anyone's guess, but it is an important goal to aim at for several reasons. As the petroleum economy is breaking down, spotting it's successor, or successors and setting up the infrastructures to support them will have huge economic implications.

On a personal level, many people who are sitting on the fence waiting to see what kind of alternative fuel will be the winner could be actually helping to find the next fuel now. It's hard to blame them for their indecision though.

There are three major categories of alternative fuels in use now, biofuels, electric power and hydrogen power. Each of these categories has products and applications in several subcategories. There are electric battery cars vs. plug in hybrids, for example, hydrogen fuel cell vs HHO on demand and biodiesel vs ethanol. You can break some of these down further still. Biodiesel is made from a number of different sources including waste vegetable oil (wvo), corn sugar cane or soybeans. New biodiesel fuels are also being made from algae.

Then there's the difficulty of tracking just who is converting their vehicles and how. The EIA has surveyed private fleet owners, quasi-government and local, state and national government bodies to get the basis for their calculations. However, there are plenty of automakers, large and small, around the world coming out with different variations of all these cars as well.

Then there are the individuals who are taking matters into their own hands and converting their vehicles themselves. Individuals have produced hybrid cars and vehicles running completely on all of these alternative fuel sources. One company that sells the instructions and maintains a worldwide support group for people doing their own HHO fuel conversion reported that more than 11,000 people bought their product last year. A couple of their competitors claimed sales of about half their figures.

Similar companies exist and sell plans, parts lists, and instructions for converting a car to run on electric power (mostly of the plugin variety). Books and instructions on how to build biodiesel kits and recipes for growing algae biodiesel also are easy to find online.

None of these companies has yet disclosed any sales figures, but their fuels represent much larger pieces of the alternative fuel market. The EIA report for 2006 included less than 200 hydrogen fueled vehicles.

The size of this individually produced marketplace of AFVs may never be officially counted or calculated. However, it's clear that the shift from petroleum to the next generation of fuels has already gathered a lot of momentum. It's also clear that individuals from around the world are not waiting for big automakers, or their governments, to decide what fuels they should use.

Liz Micik is a 28 year marketing veteran and freelance writer. At WeMakeHybrids.com she shares stories and videos of the alternative fueled vehicles [http://wemakehybrids.com/alternative-fuel-vehicles-afvs/alternative-fueled-vehicles-afv-our-collective-name] (AFVs) being built by ordinary people and small companies around the globe. She invites you to share your story, or use the stories of others and the resources the site provides to build your own alternative fuel success story.

NORTHERN SOUL - TONY MIDDLETON - 'PARIS BLUES'

TONY MIDDLETON has something of a cult following on the Rare/Northern Soul scene via several excellent dancers. Paris Blues was recorded for Bell (1776, Broadway, New York) subsidiary record label, Mala in 1966. This autobiographical number concerned Tony's down-and-out stay in the French capitol in the early 60's. Enormously popular in 1976, 'Paris Blues" still commands a high price today for this big city style production by Claus Ogerman, particularly on original blue issue copy. Equally popular, is the dramatic recording and pounding version of an old Nat 'King' Cole number 'To the Ends of the Earth' (US MGM and for an even rarer release, on UK Polydor records 1966). Other recordings sought after by soul collectors include; Spanish Maiden (Speed and Storm 1969) My Home Town (Alpha 1962) You Spoiled My Reputation (ABC Paramount 1965) My Little Red Book (US Kapp and UK London 1965) Middleton was born June 26, 1934. in Richmond, Virginia. In the mid-1950's, Middleton moved to New York with his mother. He surpassed others with his skills in various sports and started to box as an amateur in his late 20's. He began his singing career in the Dovers and then joined the 5 Willows in 1952, becoming their lead singer as the group changed their name to the Willows. In 1958 he went solo, however with several songs recorded on a variety of different labels, he still could not produce a hit song and decided to move to Paris in 1962. He also shortened his name and recorded as Tony ...

Natural Health - Balance, Variety, and Common Sense

Every day one or two health foods are flooded into the market claiming superior health benefits. Almost every month, bookstores will stock up on books that sell health and dieting programs. On the TV, exercise programs and exercise machines are advertised to keep healthy and fit. The fact is all of these works, the question is, is it really needed?

The Exotic Sounding Foods

You would have heard of the Acai berry, fig leaves, bitter melon, green tea, and so many other exotic sounding foods. Do they work? They do, but so does other foods. There is nothing wasted on Gods earth. The proof of that is when the excitement for these foods wanes, another food will crop up, the benefits overstated, and orders will start coming in increasing the demand, spiking prices for the products until a new one appears. Is it worth it? Well, that depends on how deep the wallet is. The truth is that every food that is natural has its own benefit that when examined closely will always reveal special properties that are waiting for an advertiser's attention. The properties then could be highlighted depending on current health and commercial climate. The carrot consumed like crazy some years back due to it beta-carotene property is now relegated to the background in place of "new food discoveries". In today's stiff commercial competition, the point to remember is that when it sounds too good to be true, then probably it is not.

The Fad Foods

Everybody loves to have a good figure and wants six-pack abs, everybody, and why not. When the figure is good, employment is easier to find, earning potential increases, the body feels light, looks so much healthier, younger, and energized.

What is wrong with fad foods is that it is not telling us the whole truth. If Halle Berry for example gave birth last week and appear today on TV with the same figure, everybody will be curious. The TV host knows that and so the question that would be asked is the diet that keeps her figure "bathing suit" perfect. Whatever answer Halle Berry gives will get the audience's attention and telephone will start ringing for orders. What will not be mentioned is that stars maintain a host of dieticians, physicians and exercise guru's working for the sole purpose of keeping the image of the star and maintaining it. The diet may be true but it is only a part of the whole regimen of things observed to make the star look good on camera. Rests also are monitored, exercises are supervised let alone food intake, to keep the star healthy.

Eat, exercise, rest, and work.

The natural things that we do provided it is kept on a good balance are always the best. It has kept people alive for thousands of years; it will keep the person healthy for many more. Eat a variety of food. All food is good provided the person eats variety and strives for a balanced diet. Exotic sounding and foreign delicacies and specialties are not required nor needed. Food grown in every region is sufficient and balanced for the needs of people living in that region. The key in maintaining natural health is balance, variety, and common sense.

Digital Photography Books That You Must Read Today

Some photography books are more technical than others and some are more simple, some teach you what you need to know and some just keep going on and on about useless information that you don't need to know about, so in this article I have rounded up the top 5 photography books that a new photographer should read.

1. Understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson

This one really deserves all the credit it can get, it assumes you're a new photographer and explains the methods and techniques clearly for anyone to understand without being to condescending. The book contains beautiful images along with the camera settings used when the photo was taken. This was one of the first books I read when learning digital photography and I often even now have a quick read over it. If there's one book you should read then it should be this one.

2. The digital photography book 1 by Scott Kelby

There are many big photography books out there, this isn't one of them. This is a small 200 page book with plenty of images to keep anyone happy, below these images is an explanation on how to achieve the desired result along with camera settings and any techniques used.

3 & 4. The digital photography book 2, 3 by Scott Kelby

Maybe I should have included these books above, however each book explains different types of photography. Everything from studio work to flash photography is included in these books and anyone interested in learning either should take a look. Once again the book is of small size and offers a variety of images with the explanation of equipment used, settings used and any techniques used below the image. Scott Kelby has written many books but these 2 and the 1 book above are very useful to a new photographer.

5. The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 book

After you have taken your images you will more than likely want to process or edit them, this is where Adobe Lightroom comes in. Looking at the Lightroom interface will frighten new photographers, however after reading this book I was more than confident on how to use this software. This is the only Lightroom book that I have read so there could be better ones out there, however only this on I needed to read so surely that counts for something.

A Month of Summer (Blue Sky Hills Series #1) Review

Rebecca Macklin has it all, but feels a void whenever she thinks of her parents' divorce when she was twelve and the abandonment she felt with her father out of her life. She and her Mom moved to California, and she never wanted to return to Dallas in the past twenty five or so years. Her life is great except for a few nagging worries about her husband Kyle's interest in his clients and office staff. Her fairly settled world is sent spinning when the Dallas Police call and tell her they found her father wandering the streets in a disheveled state. Rebecca has known about her father's Alzheimer's, but had allowed herself to push it aside. Let his second family deal with the issue. Her step-mother is in a nursing home recovering from a stroke and social services will be called in unless family can make arrangements. Grudgingly, Rebecca travels back to Dallas for the first time since she left as a child. She is ill prepared to face the memories and is overwhelmed by the needs of her father, the feelings towards her father's second wife Hanna Beth, and her adult son, Teddy. As she struggles to make care arrangements, sort through the home she once loved, and to help Teddy, she faces the memories of her late mother and the feelings of betrayal. Spending time under the roof that had sheltered her as a child, she begins to understand that all may not have been as it seemed to twelve year old Rebecca. A Month of Summer travels the winding road of difficult decisions and the willingness to open a heart to new truths. The portrayal of Alzheimer's, stroke recovery and cognitive damage are facets of the character's life, not the characters, themselves. Anyone who lived in the Dallas area thirty years ago will recognize the look and feel of Dallas they remember.

Rebecca Macklin could be yet another in a series of "have it all, but life is empty" female characters that seem to populate books today. A busy attorney, who also runs a boutique, has an accomplished young daughter and successful attorney husband. Boo hoo, boo hoo. And the review could stop there. However.... within the pages of A Month of Summer, Lisa Wingate has deftly crafted a multigenerational tale of love, deception and the power of forgiveness and redemption.
Just be careful not to start reading this book during a bath....or you'll find yourself all pruney because you don't want to stop long enough to get out and dry off....even if the hot water is all gone!

Characters give insight - Karen Eichstadt - Cincinnati OH
This is an excellent piece of writing giving the reader worthwhile insight into some characters. Hanna Beth was initially perceived as a ruthless person yet as we get to know her, we understand her situation more fully, even though she is a stroke victim who cannot talk. Teddy, a lovable character, finds those who need him, in ways we might not imagine. I found this book stirring and hopeful. A wonderful read.

Great - L. Miller -
Good, wonderful, great. What else can I say? She is an amazing writer. Having dealt with caretaking issues of older relatives myself, this book was a Godsend. More than anything, it reminded me that through difficulty come some of the treasures of life. There is always a place for hope, and this book nurtures that place. A beautiful story of family finding their way to one another. Not to be missed.

A Month of Summer - JaneA Clear -

Really enjoy this author, but... - M.V. - TX, USA
The main character in this book drove me crazy with her indecisiveness and doubts. I know it wasn't her fault but arghhh! Besides that the book was really good and I look forward to reading more in this series. This author is very good at storytelling and I think everyone will enjoy this book along with others that she has written.

Technology Helps You Learn Basic Spanish

As anyone who has learned another language, other than their native tongue will tell you, attaining a level of fluency can be difficult indeed. Of course, the older you get the harder it becomes. Children who are brought up in bilingual homes think nothing of speaking several languages. And when language is taught in school, smaller children literally absorb the lessons; language comes easier for children than it does for adults who often need a multitude of supplemental tools in order to help them with the transition. Because Spanish is one of the most popular languages to be learned in the modern world, many adults look to find easier ways to seek fluency; and if not fluency, then just the fundamentals.. Luckily, in today's technologically advanced world, there are a variety of tools that consumers can use to learn basic Spanish.

First and foremost, there still exists the bevy of printed material designed to help you learn basic Spanish. These include dictionaries that translate a word from English into Spanish and vice versa. Most are pocket-sized and can be carried with you to a Spanish speaking country where you use it when necessary. There are also a variety of word books that help you learn fundamentals very easily with the help of pictures and quiz cards.

But the modern day equivalent of these learning tools is of course the CD and DVD. CDs are quite convenient as they can be popped into your CD player while you are in the car, walking the dog, shopping, or doing any variety of activities. Most people find the audio to be quite helpful in their quest to learn basic Spanish, as it is helpful to hear how the word is pronounced.

DVDs offer classroom-like instruction in the comfort of your own home. Lessons are taught to learn basic Spanish through an instructor and a number of tools that would ordinarily be used in the classroom. DVDs are helpful because you can simply watch them over and over again to absorb lessons at your own pace.

But perhaps the greatest technological advancement to learn basic Spanish is the electronic devices that you can now carry that help you translate on the spot. These devices include an audio dictionary. So if you type a word in English it will say it back to you in Spanish. This can be enormously helpful in those situations where you are stuck. Consumers who are not quiet confident in their Spanish speaking abilities find these devices to be their most important tool when visiting Spanish speaking countries.

Book Clubs

Everyone knows that reading expands our horizons and Book Clubs help to do this at an even greater level, with the in-depth discussions and assimilations of different viewpoints all contributing to increasing our knowledge and appreciation of the world around us.

Book Clubs are the societies of books fans. It's like a complete guide for the information and availability of various books. Book Clubs (society) organizes various meetings among their club members for discussions regarding books and also for making their book club more beneficial for their consumers. Book Clubs also arrange discussion sessions through Internet services for example e-mails etc. These Clubs are not only for the students, these offers reading material for all age groups with variety of books, novels and many more.

Reading is beneficial for all of us in everyway- to increase our knowledge, to exercise our mind. We know that there's not even a single side effect of this brain exercise. Reading fairy tales is not only the right of a kid. Even a low cost newspaper gives us information. So, type of book to read should not differentiated on the basis of age group. Every good book is for every person. I believe that- Book was originally from a book club. Must be disclosed, no matter how well-preserved the book is.

Joining a reading group i.e. Book Club can also help to extend your reading, as you'll be tempted to try different types of books that you might not otherwise have chosen by yourself. Many people can become accustomed to the comfort of reading in a favorite genre and may not realize how much they might actually enjoy an altogether different type of book.

Each new book allows you the opportunity to "start afresh" and "do better" - whether it is with more participation, improved leadership of discussions, and more commitment to reading or simply better retention of the information learnt.

Book Clubs are a great way to start practicing expressing your opinions to an audience or summarizing information and presenting it in a coherent and engaging way.

For shy people like me, who love to read- Book Clubs are the right ground to share their views with others through this best source, where I can put my ideas, views in front of other people regarding my hobby- Reading.

India Today Book Club gives me this opportunity to easily find and afford the books of my choice and discussing the same with other members and also- the holiday vouchers offered by India Today Book Club are really helpful and combined in some offers with the free return ticket they helped me have a good family vacation last weekend.

For me- Reading is not just Reading, now, it's Fun and Love!!

Sharing Books and Reading With Your Children

Reading books to small children, especially at night, will ensure that they sleep peacefully. During the daytime, sharing and reading books to your children is an activity in which the child not only learns new words but also learns to relate it to real life. For example, after learning about a dog in the book, a child might utter the words "bow-wow", the minute he or she sees a dog in real life.

So, not only are the children entertained while you read them a book, but the information within the book is also transferred into their tiny minds. You should start with picture books and slowly move on to storybooks. Ask your children questions about the characters to interact with them, instead of just reading to them. By reading to them aloud, the children will also grab the correct phonetics to pronounce words. Once the children get older, you can also have them read to you. This will give you an idea of their grasping power and whether they are using the correct expressions while narrating the story. You can also induce your little one to drink up that hot glass of milk as you tell him a bedtime story.

You can join your local library to ensure a regular stock of books at your house. You can take your children along and they can decide on which books they want to take home to read. They can also share these books among themselves or with other children. Most children love to watch cartoons, so instead of just banning the TV, regulate the timings they can watch with some time dedicated for book reading and playing. This will ensure that they do not end up as couch potatoes. You can also take your books along with your children when camping or going to the hairdressers or the doctor. Not only will the books keep them engrossed, it will also keep them calm in unfamiliar surroundings.

Later on in life, encourage your children to read good storybooks or novels. Children who start reading early in life have a tendency to carry on reading throughout their life, and the seeds of reading have to be sown by you into their minds. On their birthday, in addition to gifting them their favorite toy, you can also give them some books. You can also keep your interest in reading books alive by reading to them. This will encourage them to sit besides you with their favorite book.

You should, therefore, be a good role model and inspire your children to start reading at a young age. Reading to them when they are young will not only create a lasting warm bond between your children and you, but in later life will also enable them to be better informed adults.

The Language of Sycamores (Tending Roses, Book 3) Review

Karen Sommerfield receives news that she is being laid off, despite years of loyalty and the fact that she helped build the company to what it is today. She also receives bad news that a cancer that she thought she would not see again has returned. Her doctor has asked her to make an appointment as soon as possible, as he thinks that the initial test results are pointing towards the return of this disease, but he is not one-hundred percent sure.

Karen has not been home since the death of Grandmother Rose two years ago. Going home brings back many happy memories of a woman Karen had loved. While at home dealing with the emotional drama taking place in her life, Karen also becomes involved in a summer camp program called JUMP KIDS. As Karen's her outlook on life changes, her heart opens and she learns to love again.

THE LANGUAGE OF SYCAMORES is a beautifully written story about a woman who finds herself needing direction in her life. This book about family and the ties that come with them is a novel to be cherished. The central plot of this novel may center around Karen, but it is the secondary characters and the love that shines from the pages that make this an emotional read. Learning about her history Karen finds the things her Grandma Rose did and said all come from a past that she knew nothing about. As she learns about her ancestors, her life takes on a new direction and she grows as a person.

Lisa Wingate is definitely a talented writer. As the third novel in a four book series, THE LANGUAGE OF SYCAMORES can definitely stand alone, but having read and become enthralled with Karen, and her family, this reviewer definitely will be seeking out the previous (TENDING ROSES, GOOD HOPE ROAD) and the fourth novel, DRENCHED IN LIGHT. Having previously been released in 2005, luckily for this reader, all four novels are on bookshelves everywhere.

A Story with a Heart - Susan C. Ramsey - Wayne, New Jersey USA
I loved this book which is really a continuation of a series called Tending Roses-a series revolving around a very strong character Grandma Rose and her impact on the other members of her family. This book alone is a lovely read-particularly relevant today about rescuing those less fortunate.

If you are looking for a wonderful book, read this one! - Jaryn G. DiBenedetto - Auburn, AL USA
I would recommend reading Tending Roses first before reading because you will get more out of this book. I really enjoyed this book. Lisa Wingate does an excellent job at sending her message every time. Wingate's message is always the same-take a good, hard look at the choices you are making in your life and remember what is important-but never in a preachy or boring way. Every Wingate book sends this same message in a different way-I feel like that every book that I read by Wingate finds a home in every reader's heart. I think that everyone will hear a different message at different points in life reading each book. Think all of the Tending Roses books should be on MUST READ lists for anyone searching for "something more" from their life-something that most people do periodically in their lives. Highly recommend but don't count on being able to keep a dry eye!

Language of the Sycamores - Angie Thatcher - Tulsa, OK
Lovely, deeply moving novel that details the trials of a multi-generational family. One of my favorite authors, Wingate weaves a spell of grandmotherly wisdom, contemporary family issues, and an old family mystery. You also see resolution to a disadvantaged child finally finding a safe home after being in her first two novels of this series. Highly recommend.

great read - Amy D. Fairbanks - Indianapolis, IN

Lisa Wingate has given us another remarkably exciting book. I can hardly put any of her books down once I start. This book along with all of her books I have read make us look at life more closely, and see what it really important. They have been very helpful to me in prioritizing what really counts at the end of the day or at the end of life. You will enjoy.

Good Hope Road (Tending Roses Series, Book 2) Overview

Twenty-year-old Jenilee Lane whose dreams are as narrow as the sky is wide, is the last person to expect anything good to come out of the tornado that rips across the Missouri farmland surrounding her home. But some inner spark compels her to rescue her elderly neighbor, Eudora Gibson, from the cellar in which she's been trapped. To make her way to the nearby town of Poetry, where the townspeople have begun to gather. To collect from the landscape letters, photographs, and mementos that might mean something to people who have lost everything. Brought close by tragedy, Jenilee and Eudora will learn lessons about the resilience of the human spirit and the ties that make a community strong. They will travel to a place they never would have imagined.

I couldn't even finish this book. Got about 1/2 way through and gave up. Couldn't stand the corny country characters and the flimsy plot that you could figure out before you even turned the next page. If I read another "I reckon" from a character in this book I was going to lose my mind. I enjoyed her first book, don't bother with this one.

I highly recommend this book and all of the book in the series. I recently lost my mother so reading book one required a lot of kleenex. The grandmother was so like my mother.

Good Hope Road - Janette Wennerstrom - TN
Lisa Wingate is a marvelous writer. I have my copies of the Tending Roses series marked with quotes to remember. I don't often find a writer of this quality.

Drenched in Light (Tending Roses Series #4) Review

Drenched in Light is the 4th book in the Tending Roses series. I haven't read Tending Roses (Tending Roses Series, Book 1); I liked Good Hope Road (Tending Roses Series, Book 2) very much; didn't like The Language of Sycamores (Tending Roses, Book 3); and really liked this one. Perhaps the difference is that Good Hope Road and Drenched in Light are more about beginnings.

Julia is working as a guidance counselor in a performing arts middle school, after years of eating disorders destroyed her career as a dancer. She's been coasting along, mourning her lost career and chafing against her parents' solicitude--feeling sorry for herself, in short. Then her sister gets pregnant, accelerating her wedding plans; a young girl (Dell, from the previous books) who's a gifted musician is failing her classes and the administration wants her out of the school--not least because she's not "the right sort"; and it becomes more and more obvious that there's a drug problem in the school that everyone is denying.

All those things make Julia focus on someone other than herself and her own problems, and she ends up discovering passion and drive for something besides dance. Especially important was that she took responsibility for her actions and decisions, both in the present and in the past.

The feeling of hope at the end of Drenched in Light is, I think, what women's fiction books in general are aiming for.

Drenched in Light (Tending Roses Series #4) Overview

Deep in my heart, a part of me will always be barefoot, running through the shallows of Mulberry Creek, with my eyes closed and my arms stretched out like I could fly.

Once a gifted ballet dancer, Julia Costell understands the joy of body and soul lost in a perfect moment. But after buckling under the demands of a professional dance career, she's landed with a thud as a guidance counselor at a performing arts high school. Living with her parents and feeling lost, Julia is afraid she'll never soar again. Until the day young Dell Jordan is sent to her office.

In Dell's writing, Julia recognizes not only her own despair, but also luminous sparks of hope. But as Julia fi ghts to forge a brighter future for one disadvantaged student, she is drawn into startling undercurrents of conflict and denial within the academy. Only then does she begin to discover where real meaning and fulfillment lie, and realize that even though her life has seemed off course, she's been on the right path all along.

This whole series is heartwarming (though sentimental and predictable, which is sometimes okay, right?). Read and enjoy.

End of America Movie--Official Trailer

www.endofamericamovie.com Wolf's impassioned arguments prove totally compelling, and the filmmakers' accompanying illustrations transport her comparisons from the abstract to the historic- VARIETY Expertly crafted by award-winning filmmakers Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern (The Devil Came on Horseback and The Trials of Darryl Hunt) comes this provocative film, THE END OF AMERICA based on The New York Times best seller by the same name. In a stunning indictment of sweeping policy changes during the Bush years, author Naomi Wolf (The Beauty Myth) makes a chilling case that American democracy is under threat. Investigating parallels between our current situation and the rise of dictators and fascism in once-free societies, Wolf uncovers a number of deeply unsettling similarities—from the use of paramilitary groups and secret prisons to the targeted suspension of the rule of law. With this galvanizing call to arms based on her recent book, she urges regular citizens to take back our legacy of freedom and justice.

The New Media - Chris Anderson with Will Hearst

Complete video at: fora.tv "Wired" editor and "The Long Tail" author Chris Anderson talks with publisher Will Hearst about how user-created content is changing the landscape of mass media. ----- The Long Time Tail You know something is up when an audience member is taking cell phone photos of the presenter's slides for instant transmittal to a business partner. Chris Anderson does have killer slides, full of exuberant detail, defining the exact shape of the still emerging opportunity space for finding and selling formerly infindable and unsellable items of every imaginable description. The 25 million music tracks in the world. All the TV ever broadcast. Every single amateur video. All that is old, arcane, micro-niche, against-the-grain, undefinable, or remote is suddenly as accessible as the top of the pops. "The power law is the shape of our age," Anderson asserted, showing the classic ski-jump curve of popularity - a few things sell in vast quantity, while a great many things sell in small quantity. It's the natural product of variety, inequality, and network effect sifting, which amplifies the inequality. "Everything is measurable now," said Anderson, comparing charts of sales over time of a hit music album with a niche album. The hit declined steeply, the niche album kept its legs. The "long tail" of innumerable tiny-sellers is populated by old hits as well as new and old niche items. That's the time dimension. For the first time in history, archives have a business ...

Modular Adaptability- transformable architecture for rethinking the portable classroom-part2

Portable classrooms are often used as an affordable and temporary solution to overcrowded schools. At the most basic level, these structures need only provide an enclosed space that is large enough to hold class. However, as designers, we have the ability to go beyond basic functionality. Creating a modular unit that can adapt to a variety of curricular requirements provides a more impactful and dynamic learning environment for students. When the structure itself is thus integrated into the curriculum, the portable classroom becomes more than just an enclosure to hold class, it becomes a tool for learning. Before designing an adaptable, curricula-focused portable classroom, we researched several different classroom environments with a focus on how they related to their respective educational philosophies. Because our design is structured around early childhood development, our group toured a Montessori Training Center, the University of Minnesota Lab School, The Minnesota Science Museum, and Nova Classical Academy. Drawing upon this research, our design seeks to offer an interactive learning environment for both teachers and students. Additionally, the design strives to redefine performance standards for traditional portable classrooms through adaptability and efficient use of space. The portable classroom design is characterized by its rigid structural frame, which is based off the monocoque systems of ship construction. The wood frame not only provides enough structural ...
