"Freud on Seuss - The Cat in the Hat" by Josh LeBeau (book review)

My favourite Seuss character is Gerald McBoingBoing, the noise-making boy: www.youtube.com Freudian psychiatry really is this silly. Well it would be if it wasn't so sinister. How did the world ever come to tolerate a profession that is as devoid of sense as the Emperor is devoid of clothing, a profession that does nothing but harm? This remark is aimed at Freudian psychoanalysis and Freud's Belief System: not at Psychology as a Science. en.wikipedia.org Freud divided the mind into a variety of aspects, then developed theories in which these arbitrary divisions had a real, independent existence. This is pyramidology or what Richard Feynman called "cargo-cult science". en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org Human beings inherit a collection of survival strategies. Our motivations and emotions are encoded in DNA. There is no reason to believe that sex is a greater motivating force than needs be to propagate the race and differentiate the sexes. Theorists should bear in mind that only a survival advantage explains the evolution of human motivations and emotions. This survival advantage is to the genotype not the phenotype, of course. Individual genes compete for survival - which requires their carriers (in this case us) to prosper and reproduce. en.wikipedia.org
